As part of the activities to urge people to use water sparingly, UThukela District Municipality embarked on roadshows to increase awareness about water conservation and demand management during events in Alfred Duma, Inkosi Langalibalele and Okhahlamba municipalities. At least two events were held in each municipality per day.
The Mayor, Councillor AS Mazibuko accompanied by his Deputy and officials, launched the campaign, which lasted three days. The main aim of these awareness campaigns is to educate communities about the importance of saving water, the seriousness of water scarcity and also to encourage them to take care of the environment.
The Mayor urged everyone to make a difference in saving water and that people must report burst pipes to the uThukela Call Centre on 086 010 4257. He stressed the fact that we are all worried about the water situation, but working together as the district community, we can do more and make a huge difference in saving water. The Mayor encouraged those who are working to pay for basic services and promised that the indigent would be assisted.
“We must all play our part in conserving water. Water is life and everyone has a right to access potable water. We appeal to those who can afford to pay to change their attitude and do the right thing. The indigent will be assisted,” said the Mayor.
The Health and Environment Department officials were also part of the campaigns, urging communities not to dump waste anywhere and anyhow as there are safe ways of disposing waste material. The finance department also clarified to the communities about the registration of indigent support and the qualifications needed for applying.

Those who qualify are classified into three categories; namely, pensioners, child-headed households and the unemployed.
At all the roadshows, applications for indigent support were taken on the spot for those who meet the requirements. Indigent support is therefore reviewed on an annual basis.
