PREVIEW: Residents form angry protest

Fed-up with their concerns falling on deaf ears, residents took to the streets in a public protest against the alleged lack of response from their Ward Councillor.

Protest action ensued when residents of Ward 25 took to the streets on Monday, May 29.

Community members alleged Ward 25 Councillor, Mqapheleni Ngcobo, showed no interest in his ward.

This came after the housing project in Siyahlala-la Informal Settlement started in 2014.

“There has been no development in Fairleigh since 1982,” claimed one of the residents.

Upset residents said RDP homes were only being built in Siyahlala-la.

Protest: Empty promises?

The municipality allegedly promised to build 1 205 RDP houses and Fairleigh residents would receive a 30 per cent allocation.

When families of the informal settlement started moving into RDP homes, the Fairleigh residents were furious.
