The launch of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and Community Works Programme (CWP) took place at Wembezi Stadium last Wednesday.
The launch was coupled with a clean-up campaign. The aim of this event was to encourage the public to look after the environment.
These programmes are the government’s intervention to eradicate unemployment, poverty and inequality in our communities, while providing skills. They temporarily provide an employment safety net for the poorest of the poor. Launching the programme, the Mayor of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, Councillor Jabu Mbele called on all residents to use dustbins for litter and refrain from illegal dumping.

“We are here today also to commit ourselves and encourage others as well to care of our environment. Let us have clean streets and public places. Start practising the issue of cleaning up at home; educate those younger than you to use dustbins for litter so that all our places can be clean.”
Speaking to the EPWP and CWP workers, the Mayor asked them to take their job seriously and not be intimidated by anyone. She promised that they will exit the programme with skills to assist them enter the job market and have job opportunities, which include on-the-job training for students, and positions as general cleaners, data collectors/capturers, community liaison officers, clerks and operators.
These workers will be helping the municipality in ensuring that all our residents reside in a safe environment.
