For several months, the residents of Belmont Court have been living with a leak. The murky water is seeping from two manholes at the back of the property.
In an effort to halt the incessant leak, Belmont Court resident Angela Keyter began investigating the cause of the leak. Phone calls, emails and visits were made to private plumbers, uThukela District as well as Inkosi Langalibalele Local municipalities.
In an email to the Estcourt News, Mrs Keyter details the avenues she has gone through to have the leak repaired. However, all of this proved futile and the leak is presently trickling its way into Belmont Court.

“After months of going through all the right channels. Months of being tossed from pillar to post. Hours on the phone speaking to people. Days and days of emails and messages and all to no avail,” said Mrs Keyter.

During the latest visit from a district municipality team last Monday, three hours were spent opening and unblocking manholes.
This too, did not help, as Mrs Keyter reports that the water was overflowing by Saturday ‘worse than ever’.
She has made several suggestions to local and district authorities about the source of the leak.
“Does the car wash have interceptor tanks? Or are they pumping the water directly into the sewer? A storm water drain and a gutter that is always wet in our dry seasons, does that not ring bells? There is a huge problem in this town, not only does no one want to take responsibility, but it all functions on who you know and some people do not do the right things. Inspectors and certain figures in authority allow certain irregularities to get passed.
“I trust all people involved would please do the right thing and get this mess cleaned up as soon as possible,” said Mrs Keyter. She adds that the constant flow of water down the gutter in Albert Street is also a cause for concern and needs investigating.
