The IFP is now celebrating outside the Princess Mgogo building on Victoria Street as their welcome the installation of the new Umzinyathi District Mayor, Mthandeni Ngubane of Greytown, took the chain this morning at the inauguration ceremony held at Battlefields Country Lodge.
This follows months of the District being without a Council after the August 3 Nquthu election ended in a stalemate which meant that the District was without a Council.
However, following the IFP’s landslide win in Nquthu, the Council has been constituted with an IFP majority, overturning five years of ANC-led rule.
Ntombikayise Mdlalose is the Deputy Mayor while is FG Sikhakhane of Msinga.
In his first address, District Mayor Ngubane said there would be an forensic investigation to deal with all financial issues and a skills audit to ensure those employed over the past five years are qualified.
However, he told the Courier this ‘was not revenge but a check to ensure those working for the District are qualified to do so without any nepotism being involved.”

He added that the suspension of the financial and municipal manager created suspicion over the ANC using District funds to campaign for the Nquthu elections.
