Maths is a dread word at school. But thanks to the innovative the K2U Learning Systems, the ‘horror subject’ is becoming easier to master. A workshop was recently hosted by Greg Shapiro,  Chairperson of the Maths and Physics Foundation and Founder and Director of the K2U Learning Systems with the help of Khula – a David Rattray Education Initiative – and the Pearson Marang Education Trust.
Through the kind sponsorship of FedAuto Dundee, over 25 Foundational Maths Educators from 19 Umzinyathi Schools at the Ingudlane Restaurant / Conference Centre.
After a tasty breakfast catered by Kevin, the Ingudlane chef and his team, they were mentally challenged and inspired by Greg Shapiro to learn four powerful skills to enhance their students’ performance in maths.
The teachers were shown a short video of two Glencoe Primary school students – one in Grade 4 and the other in Grade 6 – who have just recently used these skills to master 100% accuracy on their Bonds and Multiplication Tables. This was done in a matter of hours compared to the normal time period generally accepted for these skills. This removed all doubt of the power of these teaching aids.
Greg has repeatedly emphasised, “It is the lack of competency in these four basic skills that so many high school students are battling to cope with maths”.

Ben Henderson, General Manager for the David Rattray Foundation expressed his hopes that the teachers take this seriously and do what it takes to ensure as many of their students master these skills.

Sofiso Buthelezi, Pearson Marang Educational Trust Umzinyathi representative, echoed the same strong sentiments: “Every child should be exposed to these skills and given the chance to excel at maths – these skills really make it possible, it is exactly what this country needs right now to begin eliminating our maths crisis!”
Delegate, Nomathemba Nyembe, one of Umzinyathi’s Senior Educator Specialist commented that: “I absolutely loved the workshop and wish there to be more of them as they are so empowering”.

The workshop proved to be very well received by all the attendees and the Maths and Physics Foundation (MAPF) would like to take this opportunity to thank the above sponsors for their financial commitment and support in helping to make this event such a success. Many of the delegates said that it was really fantastic to see private companies donate their time and resources to these causes.
K2U, the service provider, will be following up with the teachers and helping them implement the program in their classes from the beginning of next term. We are looking forward to seeing a wonderful improvement in the class averages.
