WHILE parts of Vryheid have had their water supply restored, there are still some whose taps remain dry.
Vryheid is by no means out of the woods when it comes to the water situation that has had residents spending large amounts on water tanks and pumps over the last year, as well as paying water delivery fees to locals who have seized the opportunity to make a living out of the crisis, and the community still needs to work sparingly with the water that we do have.
Stolen water meters, vandalised fire hydrants and the like are therefore utterly detrimental to the already delicate water supply that we must work so sparingly with.

With this in mind, it seems that AbaQulusi Municipality is catching on to the urgency of the situation when water meters are destroyed, stolen or damaged.
Last Thursday night was a prime example as workers from the municipality responded swiftly to the report of eight water meters being simultaneously destroyed by a water delivery vehicle which happened to allegedly reverse over them accidentally, sending thousands of litres of wasted water gushing from the now demolished pipes.
The fault was reported to Link Up as it was after AbaQulusi Municipality’s office hours and municipal workers, who were working on another fault at the time, were deployed at the soonest available time to tend to the matter.
In less than an hour, four workers in AbaQulusi overalls arrived at the scene and worked tirelessly, in the icy winter air and cold water, on getting the meters repaired, using only the headlights from their vehicle to navigate their way around the crushed pipes and meters as quickly as possible, saving more water from being needlessly wasted.
