Sewer leak bad for business in Ladysmith

Customers are disgusted by the sight as well as the horrible smell

A sewer leak that has been leaking for four weeks at Silverton Radiators in Lyell Street has the business owner pointing his finger at the district municipality and accusing them of poor service delivery.

The leak was allegedly caused by a blockage in the main pipeline that runs in Lyell Street. As a result, the sewerage system at the business premises overflowed and burst, discharging disgusting waste.

“It has been six weeks since the sewer burst, caused by the pipeline that runs in Lyell Street. The municipality was contacted but said that both their TLBs are broken, so they could not come and dig and solve the problem,” said Silverton Radiators owner Mr Pieter Bezuidenhout.

He also stated that the sewer leak is bad for business, as raw sewage runs into the parking lot, making it difficult for customers to park. He says that customers are disgusted by the sight as well as the horrible smell.

IFP councillor L Bhoobun questioned whether the municipality are even doing their jobs. She says uThukela needs to fix the sewer, as Mr Bezuidenhout’s business is suffering as a result of the leak.
