Woman falls victim to departmental employment scam in Ladysmith

A woman fell victim to a scam after being promised a job at a government department recently.
The government department in question, which is believed to be the Department of Correctional Services (Ladysmith), had posts available.
It is believed the woman was requested to pay an amount of R1500 at a local business, after which her ‘uniform’ size was taken by a person dressed in the uniform of the government department.
She was contacted at a later stage and requested to deposit an amount of R250 for a student card, which she did.
When the woman reported to the department, she was surprised to learn that she had been the victim of a scam.
Police are requesting the community not to fall prey to any scams involving promises of employment. If you are approached with a job offer, verify with the department concerned that the person is indeed employed with that department and that they have a mandate to secure employment.
All government departments have a recruitment policy and procedure in place. Verify with the department concerned what that policy and procedure is.
Reputable businesses and government departments do not require payment up-front from those applying for jobs. If such a requirement is put forward, you should see it as a warning sign that the job offer is a hoax.
“An appeal is made to job seekers to be wary when receiving calls about employment, especially when you have not applied for any work, and to avoid contact with anyone who promises you employment in exchange for cash,” says Ladysmith police communications officer Captain Charmaine Struwig.
