Are municipal workers befouling the Hardwick Street Cemetery?
A family’s recent visit to the site was described as disappointing, after they witnessed evidence of littering and other inappropriate behaviour.
Most notable among the refuse were face masks.
These devices are believed to have been discarded by teams of municipal workers, almost paralleling an article in the Advertiser two years earlier.
Other items discarded among graves included alcohol bottles.
“It’s disgusting how some believe they are allowed to utterly disrespect those buried in the cemetery.”
The municipality provided no response on the matter, nor did it comment on previously mentioned plans to control access into the cemetery.
However, the matter did receive response in the 2015 article.
Head of Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries, Vish Govender said at that time that an investigation was to be launched into the matter.
He explained used or old masks had to be returned by all workers.
Residents continue to use the Hardwick Street Cemetery as a thoroughfare, and the family feels the need for fencing of the grounds is more urgent than ever.
“At the very least, the municipality should implement measures to control access to the cemetery.”
