Watch: Opposition party members forced out of full council meeting by bodyguards in Ladysmith

Councillors say they were manhandled by the bodyguards

Members of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were forced out of a full council meeting by bodyguards this morning (June 29) at Alfred Duma Local Municipality.

Members of the IFP and EFF asked council to add an item on the agenda with regards to job creation in the Ladysmith area.

This was asked by the members in February and did not happen. During the full council meeting today, the members again asked for the item to be added on the agenda and again it did not happen.

Thereafter, the speaker ordered bodyguards to come into the chamber and forcibly remove members of the IFP and EFF from the council meeting.

Cllr Lizwilakha Qwabe from the IFP was taken out of the meeting by force, saying that bodyguards grabbed him and pushed him out of the chamber.

Councillors say that they were manhandled by the bodyguards.

IFP Cllr Abbas Warasally said that the ANC is only employing people who are card-carrying members of the ANC. He added that it’s unfair and unethical for the community of Ladysmith, and the municipality does not belong to the ANC.

Cllr Warasally also said that being an opposition party, they will do everything possible to stop the corruption of the ANC in the municipality. He concluded by saying that the municipality is trying to do what the ANC does in Parliament, with members being thrown out.
