Update: Municipality in complete shutdown due to strike in Ladysmith

SAMWU representatives have taken all the workers' grievances to municipal officials so that the matter can be resolved

This morning (July 6), municipal workers were chased out of municipal buildings by fellow workers after embarking on industrial action.

This follows the protest that took place at the Department of Hygiene, Engineering & Services yesterday, when municipal workers burned tyres in front of the department gate, making sure nobody could get in.

Today, the municipal workers gathered at the Electricity Department, where they listed all their issues to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) to present to municipal officials.

“We are very unhappy with the municipal officials and management. We are unhappy with how they treat us as workers. They do not take us into consideration and we will not work until our cries have been heard. We will also ensure that all municipal workers stay out of the office until the officials take us into consideration,” said angry municipal worker Nomathemba Shezi.

All municipal offices are on complete shutdown as the strike enters its second day.

The issues of out-sourcing of jobs, hiring of people from outside the boundaries of Alfred Duma Local Municipality, hiring inexperienced people as permanent workers, and also the fact that they earn a small salary are the major issues that provoked the strike.

SAMWU representatives have taken all the workers’ grievances to municipal officials so that the matter can be resolved.
