Complaints about a litter in the parking area had unforeseen results for a local businesswoman.
The businesswoman, who opted to remain anonymous, said approaching the municipality about abundant mess near her property in the CBD led to a skip bin being removed instead.
This lot links Paterson and Voortrekker Streets, near the Kenyan Arcade.
Among complaints relating to the parking area are litter on the pavements, burning refuse, the inconvenience of parked busses, missing stormwater drain covers, prostitution, general loitering and sewage overflow.
“I called the municipality to clean the skip because it was overflowing with litter and someone even lit it on fire. Now the bin is gone, which doesn’t help.”
The businesswoman said she approached municipal workers who parked in the area while on lunch breaks, in a desperate bid to have the area cleared up.
While the workers did so, she still feels a bad impression is being made.

“It’s to the point where people keep away; staff work overtime some weeks and it’s not safe.”
A second property owner listed similar complaints, and claimed to have reported these matters to the municipality on numerous occasions.
He also noted the dumping of building rubble behind his property.
The businessman further complained of more sewage flowing in front of the Harding Street entrance to the arcade, and called it a health risk.
“I had a guy who claimed he’s sort it out and it stopped for only a few days.”
Details of the complaints were forwarded to the municipality for urgent action and response, yet none was given at the time of going to press.
