Domestic waste is piling up in a cleared space just outside Estcourt on the R74. A nearby property owner says that inconsiderate homeowners choose to dump their waste in this clearing, instead of bagging it for refuse removal.

The discarded waste is often blown onto the roadside, giving off an unkempt look to visitors. The resident, who has previously cleaned up the illegal dumping at his own cost, says that it is continuing unabated.
“The municipality should make people aware about the proper refuse disposal, they should erect ‘no dumping’ signs and also impose fines on people who are responsible,” suggests the resident.
Illegal dumping is rife in and around Estcourt and when responding to this concern, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Cleansing Manager Hlanganani Hlongwane said that an active campaign to clean up areas was on-going.
The following programmes were identified:
• The Waste Management Unit has developed a programme where illegal dumping and eradication of illegally disposed garden refuse will be attended to;
• The programme started during the weekend of July 8 and 9, where collection of illegally disposed garden refuse in Brewitt Park and the Drakensview areas was attended to;
• The Waste Management Unit will now engage in the process of eradicating illegal dumping to include all the areas where complaints have been directed to the media; and
• The Waste Management Unit will eradicate illegal dumping in the affected areas, erect ‘no dumping’ signs and place skip bins where necessary.
“We however, appeal to the public to notify the municipality of the residents who are illegally disposing waste where offenders are known to the public so that proper law enforcement can be implemented,” added Mr Hlongwane.
