Inkosi Langalibalele Mayor Jabu Mbele spent her 67 minutes participating in a clean-up campaign to support government’s efforts to encourage a clean environment.
The Mayor was joined by UThukela District, Environmental Affairs, Estcourt and District Taxi Association and the Transport Department. Municipal employees contracted to the Extended Public Work Programme and Community Work Project were the part of the clean-up campaign.
Mayor Mbele thanked municipal employees and the representative from Environmental Affairs for spending their 67 minutes cleaning up the rank in Alexandra Street. She said: “Cleaning a rank is an important pillar towards achieving the rebranding, repositioning and renewal of our town. Moving forward, we will continue to work together in ensuring cleanliness in our town and its surroundings.”
Mrs Mbele added that it remains our collective responsibility to keep our environment clean and healthy at all times. The Mayor also pleaded with vendors to keep the rank clean, and use the spaces allocated to them by the Local Economic Development Department from the municipality.
All departments that were present gave messages of support to the community. They emphasised that a clean environment would lead to clean attitudes and behaviour.
Mr Zwane from the taxi association, who was at the clean-up campaign, said: “This is a good initiative, which I think must be done regularly in all other parts of town, if we are serious about cleanliness in our town. I see a huge difference because the rank was so dirty.
“I say thank you to the Mayor and our public servants for their effort.”
Ward 10 Councillor Edith Lite thanked the Department of Community Service for choosing Ward 10 for clean-up campaign and for targeting the rank.
“This campaign is good because our town is dirty, mainly due to people dumping everywhere in any open space,” she said. She added that she would like to see this campaign extended to other parts of town.
The day continued with Mrs Z Skhosana visiting the female and male wards at Estcourt Hospital to spend 67 minutes.
She gave fruit packs to the patients.
