Last week Okhahlamba Local Municipality hosted activities for Public Service Voluntary Week 2017. The week kicked off with a clean-up campaign of the Bergville central business district (CBD).

Staff members from across all departments joined the campaign to clean the town of Bergville. On Tuesday the municipality held its main Mandela Day activity in the Mhlwazini area of Ward three.

Municipal staff, community members and colleagues from various government departments came together to revamp a vandalised community health facility. New doors and windows were installed, the floors were redone; and the walls were plastered and repainted.

The atmosphere was electric, with a lot of camaraderie between all the participants. On Wednesday, the municipality in partnership with the Al-Imdaad Foundation hosted a fun day at the Sprinkle Orphanage in the Obonjaneni area, Ward six. The event was led by the Municipal Manager, as well as the senior management of the municipality.

A fun, fast-paced football match between the children and municipal officials took place. Warm hats, blankets, tinned food, and clothes were also donated to the orphanage.

Thursday’s events saw the municipal delegation going to the Green Point Area in Ward 13. Visits to senior citizen’s homes were conducted, a community dialogue was held, and walking sticks, warm blankets and warm hats were distributed to the community.

The week-long activities drew to a close on Friday in the Zwelisha Area, Ward nine. A health awareness campaign was held for senior citizens at the Bergville Wellbeing Centre. This was followed by sporting activities and the distribution of food parcels and warm hats by the Mayor.

The municipality would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Bergville businesses, the Al-Imdaad Foundation, and in particular, to the community at large for donating towards this initiative.
