R303-million went missing from Umzinyathi, new District Mayor reveals
He said he hopes the investigation will only take three months to complete 'so that culprits will spend their Christmas in jail
The Provincial Treasurer in KwaZulu-Natal has tabled a wide-ranging forensic report of over 100 pages on allegations of corruption, fraud, and staff approving advance payment for work not done at the Umzinyathi District Municipality.
The Mayor of the District, Petros Mthandeni Ngubane, addressing a number Journalists yesterday urged the municipality to take swift action against individuals fingered by the report. He said the report revealed that R303 million went to’ some peoples pockets.’ Mayor Ngubane said this corruption started a from 2014 to 15 and that they will continue to investigate (up to ) 2016 when the ANC relinquished power to the IFP following the August 2016 local government elections.
Part of the allegations relate to irregular award of tenders for water schemes in the area. “Definitely we are going to take disciplinary measures and also taking the matter to the police we won’t allow money off the poorest of the poor eaten like this,” Mayor Ngubane added. He said he hopes the investigation will only take three months to complete ‘so that culprits will spend their Christmas in jail and on top of that we will make sure that they will pay back.’
