The Madadeni Regional Court sentenced a 28-year-old man to 20 years in prison on August 2, 2017 for the rape of his niece in 2014.
According to reports, the victim who was 12 years old at the time, informed her grandmother her uncle had raped her while they were residing in Blaauwbosch.
The matter was reported to the SAPS, who handed the case over to the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
During the period of investigation, it was believed the suspect fled to Mpumalanga in the hope of escaping the law.
However, after a successful investigation the suspect was located and arrested on August 24, 2014 where he stayed in police custody until his case was brought to trial.
