uThukela hosts successful Indigenous Games

All the district municipalities were represented and took part in nine different codes

uThukela District Municipality successfully hosted the 13th annual Provincial Indigenous Games over a two-day period from August 11 to 12 (Friday and Saturday) at the Kandahar Avenue sports grounds.

All the district municipalities were represented and took part in nine different codes.

These games were drawn from different cultural backgrounds, namely Induku, Ingqathu, Khokho, Amagenda, Umlabalaba, Incuva and Jukskei.

The games were also promoted to encourage certain values such as discipline and respect among the participants.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Friday, uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko said that all the districts were there to participate and win. He then urged the athletes to excel in their performances and be wary of abusing drugs / alcohol.

“We are all here to participate and win. I believe that for us as a province, it is important that we do well here so that when we proceed to national level, we continue to excel and even lead at that level,” said Mayor Mazibuko.

uThukela District Municipality managed to secure a silver medal in the Driestokkies game. The overall winners were as follows: King Cetshwayo, Umgungundlovu, eThekwini, Amajuba and Umkhanyakude districts.

The Indigenous Games are part of South African heritage; they reflect a rich history among the communities, with rich cultural diversity.

The games were officially closed by MEC for Sports, Arts & Culture Ms B Sithole-Moloi, who congratulated all the athletes and then handed over trophies and medals to the deserving winners.
