High municipal accounts spark outrage

Some residents claimed they were charged double what they're used to; others claim that the electricity consumption reading is incorrect as meter readings are few and far between

Confusion, disbelief and anger were some of the emotions that coursed through residents after they received their municipal accounts this month.

Majority of residents had not received statements from Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality since July. They say they were told that a ‘new billing system’ was in place and some say they were told that the financial year end affected the printing and distribution of municipal accounts.

However when accounts were received this month, some residents noted a major increase in their accounts. Some residents claimed they were charged double what they’re used to; others claim that the electricity consumption reading is incorrect as meter readings are few and far between.

“Where do they expect us to get money from to pay such high bills captured for two months due to them being unable to do their work properly?” questioned one angry resident.

Frustrated residents say they do not receive satisfactory answers when querying from the municipality.

Responding to concerns from residents, Acting Municipal Manager, Mr PS Mkhize said: “We acknowledge the complaints received from our residents on high rated bills. The complaint is receiving the necessary attention. An investigation process has commenced, the report will be communicated once the investigation has been complete.”
