The Newcastle 911 Community Policing Forum has become a force to be reckoned with, as they leave no stone unturned, to ensure its home town is safe and sound from all things which go bump in the night, by tracking down criminals.
When in trouble, Newcastle 911 is always merely a Zello call away.
We take a look at some of the successful actions that had helped make Newcastle town a much safer place during the last month, by interventions leading to arrests:
August 1 – A scholar on his way to school was accosted by two suspects, armed with knives who proceeded to rob him of his cellphone.
The Forum was notified via social media about the incident, and decided to contact the boy for further information.
After intense investigation together with Detective Warrant Officer Mahabeer, Warrant Officer Wessels and Warrant Officer Marais of the Newcastle SAPS, the suspects were apprehended on Hardwick Street and arrested.
August 4 – Members of the CPF received information of a man and women who had been robbed in the park on Hospital Street.
After receiving a tip-off, the CPF together with the Newcastle police proceeded to Siyahlala-la informal settlement where they apprehended the suspect.
He was positively identified by the victims and arrested for robbery.
August 5 – While patrollingon Voortrekker Street, a member of Newcastle 911 witnessed a man being attacked and robbed by four suspects.
The member gave chase and managed to apprehend one of the suspects, however, the other three escaped. The suspect was taken to the police station and was charged and arrested.
August 8 – Members of the CPF received information about a robbery in the CBD area, where four suspects had robbed a man of his cellphone.
Using video footage of the incident and tip-offs, members identified the suspects as well as their location.
Together with the SAPS, one suspect was apprehended in Montegue Street and taken to the police station for questioning.
The suspect then informed police of the whereabouts of the other three men, which led police to a shop in Fairleigh, where the three suspects were caught.
The culprit admitted to the robbery and was arrested.
