The road construction on Watt Street in the Industrial Area was expected to be completed in May, but is delayed yet again.
In a previous statement issued by the Newcastle Municipality Communications Department, the project was initially scheduled for four months.
They claimed it was extended twice, to eight months, due to unforeseen circumstances such as late payments, relocation of existing services and inclement weather.
With a budget of more than R3.5-million allocated for its completion, and an additional R466 791 for the extension of a 120 metre concrete side drain, catering for storm water, the municipality initially anticipated the project would be completed by the end of February.
What is the delay on Watt Street construction?
There was no valid reason why the project was not complete, and the municipality claimed they had issued the contractor with a notice of intention to terminate the contract due to non-performance.
A final inspection of the project was conducted by an engineer on May 31 for practical completion.
“There are still a number of outstanding activities on this contract. After the inspection was conducted numerous meetings were held with the contractor in addressing poor workmanship as well as progress. The contract was then terminated due to failing to meet the deadline for completion.”
What is the future of Watt Street?
According to the municipality, the matter has been handed to its legal office that will address an appeal received from the contractor.
“Once this process is completed the municipality will then appoint another contractor to complete the outstanding works.”
