An angry mob from Estcourt and Rensburgdrift gathered outside the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court today (August 28) as five men made an appearance in the much-talked-about “cannibalism case”.
The five suspects are: Nino Mbatha (32), Lindokhule Masondo (32), Sthembiso Sithole (31) Lungisani Magubane (30) and Khayelihle Lamula (32).
Not all of them have admitted to eating human flesh. Some of them were only caught in possession of human flesh. None of them face charges of cannibalism. Three of them face charges of murder and possibly rape. All five face charges of possession of human tissue, which is a criminal offence. Ironically, cannibalism is not a criminal offence, as there is no law on the statutes against eating human flesh.

The community marched to the court to show their outrage at the alleged cannibalism being practiced by the men who were arrested. One of the suspects walked into the Estcourt police station with a human arm and leg, saying he was “tired of eating human flesh”.
It is believed that Mbatha practiced as an nyanga in Ladysmith before fleeing to Estcourt for unknown reasons.
The suspects, who appeared in court for a formal bail application, chose to withdraw their bid for bail earlier today.
The case is being investigated by the Provincial Occult-Related Crime Unit.
