KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said homeowners were robbed of their household items, and other valuable, by criminals who masqueraded as either municipal or Telkom employees.
The police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned communities around KZN to be aware of the resurgence of a new modus operandi used by criminals to commit robberies.
KZN SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said homeowners were robbed of their household items, and other valuable, by criminals who masqueraded as either municipal or Telkom employees.
“A group of four or five males, wearing municipal or Telkom workwear as well as reflector jackets, approach homes pretending to be there for meter readings or other maintenance purposes. As soon as the occupants open the gate for them, they hold them at gunpoint and rob them.”
The community was warned to be vigilant of such incidents.
“Municipal employees do not come in groups when conducting meter readings and they are usually on foot. No Telkom employee will come into your house if you have not reported any fault with their customer services.”
Homeowners should ensure they instruct their family members, as well as their domestic employees, to always be cautious and to not allow strangers into their homes.
“If you are suspicious of strangers in your residential area, you should request them to produce their identification cards and verify it with the relevant authorities,” Zwane concluded.
