Alfred Duma Local Municipality will be hosting its first Heritage Festival that will be held in partnership with the Department of Arts & Culture as a newly-merged municipality.
This is however the seventh annual Heritage Festival, to be held from September 9 to 23 in Ladysmith.
The Heritage Festival aims at celebrating and promoting heritage in our town in order to remember and enhance the knowledge of our roots, customs, beliefs and cultural traditions.
It is a community-driven festival that will see a programme of music, dance and performance throughout the month of September.
The programme for the 2017 Heritage Festival is as follows:
Umkhumbi Competition will take place on September 9 at the Uitval Sports Ground, commencing 9am.
The Zulu Dance (Umkhumbi) will be separated into three categories: Isigekle, Ushameni and Umkhumbi. It will be open for both young and old who wish to participate: Registration is now open and forms are available at the Siege Museum.
Maskandi Competition will take place on Saturday, September 16, at KwaShuzi Sports Ground, Umhlumayo, commencing at 9am. The purpose of the competition is to re-brand Emnambithi/Ladysmith as the home of music. This competition also aims at uplifting local musicians, as well as being a great platform to impress and possibly secure a recording deal with well-known recording companies.
It will be held in conjunction with the KZN Department of Arts & Culture (Western Region).
Groups from the entire uThukela District are invited to compete for the prize money. Registration forms are available at the Siege Museum and Department of Arts & Culture offices.
Uzime Wezintombi will take place on Saturday, September 23, at Gcizela Sports Ground, Watersmeet, commencing at 9am.
As part of Heritage Month, Uzime Wezintombi (which is also known as the Maidens Camp competition) will be hosted once again this year with an intention to explore the uniqueness of Zulu culture, to encourage young girls to abstain from sexual activity until marriage and also to limit the possibility of sexually transmitted infections through tradition and culture.
An invitation is extended to the community of Emnambithi/Ladysmith as a whole to take part in attending this event.
