Ncandu 86 Round Table, Winter Knights warms up with a blanket drive

Members, Karl Niebuhr and Byron Bjorseth, were joined by Ruth Lovelock, Mortimer Toyota and Thusong Projects. The team headed off to Trim Park where they handed out food, blankets and toiletries to the destitute who live under the bridge.

Ncandu 86 Round Table embarked on its annual Winter Knights Blanket Distribution Drive on Friday, August 25.

Members, Karl Niebuhr and Byron Bjorseth, were joined by Ruth Lovelock, Mortimer Toyota and Thusong Projects. The team headed off to Trim Park where they handed out food, blankets and toiletries to the destitute who live under the bridge.

According to Niebuhr, the cold front which engulfed Newcastle last week, made it the perfect opportunity to spread some warmth in the lives of those who had nothing.

Niebuhr said food parcels and blankets, which Lovelock herself had made for the homeless, purchased with funds raised with the help of Melos Pub and Grill back in July, were distributed.

He said the happy and relieved smiles on the faces of the individuals who received these gifts was a sight to behold.

“We were honoured to join forces with the team at Mortimer Toyota this year, who sent two eager staff members along with all the blankets collected at the dealership during the Winter Knights campaign,” said Niebuhr.

Once done at Trimpark, the team ventured through town where they handed out the rest of the blankets and food parcels to deserving individuals.

Both Niebuhr and Bjorseth thanked everyone on behalf of Ncandu 86 Round Table, who were involved in this year’s project, as well as each resident of Newcastle who contributed to the 2017 Winter Knights Initiative.

“We look forward to having the support of Mortimer Toyota, as well as their generous and selfless staff members, for many years to come. And a special thank you must be made to Ruth Lovelock, who herself is a pillar within the community. Without you all of this would not have been possible,” Niebuhr concluded.
