COMMUNITY: Rotarian’s provide mobility to those in need

According to Rotarian, Daniel Couper, each recipient thus far had been carefully selected according to their size and needs, as well as their disability.

Majuba Rotary Club, in association with ArcelorMittal, donated brand new wheelchairs to five disabled residents of Newcastle and surrounding areas, as part of the Mobility = Freedom Wheelchair Project, on September 1.

Present at the Ferrum Swimming Pool for the handing over ceremony was CEO of ArcelorMittal, Wim de Klerk, the General Manager of Newcastle Works, Charlton Whitcher and CSI Manager, Joe Nowbath.

The Mobility=Freedom Wheelchair Project in partnership with ArcelorMittal began in February 2017, and after much planning and motivation, 110 wheelchairs were delivered to Durban Harbor from the United Kingdom (UK) Wheelchair Foundation, bound for Newcastle.

According to Rotarian, Daniel Couper, each recipient thus far had been carefully selected according to their size and needs, as well as their disability.

Since starting the project in February, Couper said the initiative had officially handed over 95 brand new wheelchairs to the destitute, disabled people of the community of Newcastle and surrounding areas.

“Majuba Rotary Newcastle thank ArcelorMittal for the generosity and compassion it has shown to the community. They partnered up with our club on this project, and have to date uplifted the lives of 95 permanently disabled members of our community,” concluded Couper.
