A 66-year-old woman was alone at home in D-Section on the evening of August 27 when an unfamiliar man gained entry to her house.

The 27-year-old raped the woman and thereafter strangled her. Not content with his dastardly deeds, he then struck the helpless woman with a blunt object, which resulted in her death.

Once a case was opened, the investigating officer utilised his network of informants and shortly thereafter, the 27-year-old murderer and rapist was identified.

Silungile Khumalo, who goes by the alias ‘Zinyane’, was traced, arrested and charged. He made a confession about the crime and on September 20, he was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment for murder and rape.
