Electricity plays a vital part in our lives, but how wellguarded are electrical sub stations?
Recently, the Signal Hill Substation was broken into, and the electrical cables stolen.
This resulted in adjoining suburbs being left without power.
While the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department resolved the issue, it seemed similar incidents of cable theft occurred on a regular basis.
In fact, the Electrical Department stated cable it happened almost daily, leaving the Newcastle Municipality to fork out the necessary monies to repair and replace the stolen cables.
The municipality said it would look at upgrading the substation’s fencing and security, to minimise further theft.
Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer Captain Jabulani Ncube, claimed the municipality was not the only victim of cable theft.
“Copper theft is on the increase, with the perpetrators selling it to unscrupulous second hand dealers, for financial gain.”
Ncube explained that if caught, suspects could face five years imprisonment. Captain Ncube urged residents to contact the SAPS on 10111 to report cable theft.
