Newcastle Public Order Policing together with Newcastle K9 Unit conducted a drug awareness campaign at schools throughout the Madadeni and Dannhauser districts on September 28.
According to police reports, the schools which were visited were Mbalenhle Primary School, Ntobeko Primary School and Mana High School.
Aside from presenting the awareness campaign, police also searched the schools and learners for drugs, alcohol and weapons
“The aim of the operation was to ensure reduction of serious and violent crimes against women and children, and to teach learners about the dangers of being involved in criminal activities, especially drugs. Learners were also educated on sexual offences and human trafficking.”
This operations had come after an awareness campaign was initiated by the SAPS Unit Commander and members of Newcastle Public Order Policing earlier in Madadeni.
During the campaign police allegedly faced many challenges in the schools they had visited, where they found Grade 6 and 7 learners had already been exposed to drugs.
They also saw an increase of bullying amongst learners which they feared would get out of control if the problem was not addressed quickly.
“As the South African Police we are committed to fighting and preventing any and all criminal activities which might occur, and we advising the elders in their communities to refrain from sending children to buy alcohol and cigarettes at the shops on their behalf. They should also monitor their children when watching TV and being active on social media.”
