Newcastle Municipality scoops awards in Provincial ceremony

At the awards ceremony, Newcastle Municipality clinched the prize for the Best Level 2 Accredited Municipality.

Newcastle Municipality is no stranger to winning accolades for its efficiency.

During the recent Provincial Govan Mbeki Awards ceremony, which was hosted by MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Ravi Pillay, Newcastle Municipality scooped two awards.

At the awards ceremony, Newcastle Municipality clinched the prize for the Best Level 2 Accredited Municipality.

Newcastle Municipality was awarded Level 2 Housing Accreditation in September 2012, tasking it with the responsibility for programme management and subsidy administration.

This encompassed project evaluation and approval, contract administration, subsidy administration, programme management, and included cash flow projection, with management and technical quality assurance.

The municipality also won the second runner-up position for Best Rural Housing Project, through its entry of the Khatide Rural Housing Project, where the municipality had uplifted the Khatide community.

“These awards indicate that while we haven’t reached our full potential, we are definitely on the right path,” said Director of Human Settlements, Muzi Shozi.

Acting Stratigic Executive Director for Community Services, Dr Dumisani Thabethe, expressed his delight with the win, saying it had set the pace for the upcoming national awards ceremony.

“This simply shows we can go nationally, but we will have to work harder as we will be competing against the best municipalities in the country at the upcoming National Govan Mbeki Awards,” he said.

The National Govan Mbeki Awards will take place at the end of October, and would determine Newcastle Municipality’s national standing.

“If we do well, we will be putting KwaZulu-Natal and our town on the map,” concluded Dr Thabethe.
