PREVIEW: Overflowing manhole spills sewage into stream

Sewage spilled from an overflowing manhole in Aviary Hill this month, possibly contaminating a nearby stream.

Newcastle’s sewage woes continued this month with an overflowing manhole.

The resulting sewage spill has possible tainted a stream and the Ncandu River.

The stream runs below the low bridge on Nagtegaal Street in Aviary Hill.

Residents took to social media, expressing fears of a possible ecological disaster.

“As can be seen, the steam that feeds the wetland is pitch black – only sewage,” exclaimed resident, Phil Hair.
