oSizweni Crime Prevention members arrested a 33-year-old man for being in possession of Nyaope, while conducting an Intelligence Driven Operation on October 20.

According to police reports, SAPS received a tip-off informing them of the suspect illegal acts.

They proceeded to the suspect’s house, where they found to bags containing Nyaope to the value of R60.

The suspect will be appearing in court soon.

Nyaope, also known as Whoonga, is a street drug which came into widespread use in South Africa since 2010.

Nyaope is most commonly sold in rural and poverty stricken areas for around R30 a hit. The drug is most commonly smoked, but it can also be heated and injected through the veins.

The substance is a mixture of various ingredients, including heroin and cannabis [dagga].

However, some of the alleged ingredients also mixed into the drug can consist of anti-retroviral drugs, milk powder, rat poison, bicarbonate of soda and pool cleaner.

The ‘high’ after using Nyaope typically wears off within six to 24 hours, and is followed by a chain of nasty after-effects.

These include stomach cramps, back ache, sweating, chills, anxiety, restlessness, depression, nausea and diarrhea.
