Father receives suspended sentence for beating his son

He then began to beat the teenager with a host of items including wire and plastic plumbing pipes

A 31-year-old father was given a suspended sentence of three years for assault and grievous bodily harm after viciously assaulting his 13-year-old son.

The teen sustained numerous bruises and open wounds all over his body following the assault on March 6. The court heard how the father became angry when he asked his son to fetch his school socks, only to hear that he had lost them.

He then began to beat the teenager with a host of items including wire and plastic plumbing pipes. He also punched him with clenched fists.

Fearing for his life, the son ran away from home. He was spotted by a relative, crying not far from the house and when they asked him what had happened, he told them the full story.

The police were notified and the Glencoe SAPS responded immediately, taking the child to a Social Worker.  The boy was then taken to Dundee Hospital to be medically examined and to have his injuries treated.

The Dundee FCS Unit was then assigned the case, with W/O BC Mazibuko swiftly conducting an investigation and tracing the father who was arrested and charged.

On October 6, he was found guilty in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court and sentenced.
