Nquthu Regional Court sentenced Thabani Buthelezi of Mondlo, Vryheid to 15 years behind bars for raping a 16-year-old pregnant woman.
According to police reports, the 16-year-old victim who was three months pregnant at the time was walking in Mondlo area, when Buthelezi grabbed her.
“He dragged her into a nearby vacant toilet, where he threatened her with a knife and then proceeded to rape her and rob her of her cellphone.”
Mondlo police station transferred the docket to the Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.
Intensive investigations soon led to the arrest and prosecution of the accused.
Buthelezi was trialed and sentenced on November 14, and received an additional eight years for robbery.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded detectives on their determination to solve the case.
“The accused will spend the rest of his life in prison where he belongs, since he proved that he does not deserve to live within our community,” he said.
