Newcastle Regional Court convicted and sentenced 27-year-old Sithembiso Percy Mncube to 15 years imprisonment for rape.
The sentence was handed down on Friday (November 17).
KZN SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, said the rape occurred in the Normandien area.
“In April 2016 at around 6.30pm, the 26-year-old victim was in the Normandien area, on her way to visit her boyfriend, when she was approached by the accused.”
It is believed Mncube dragged her into the overgrowth, where he assaulted, strangled and raped her.

A motorist allegedly heard the screams of the woman, and stopped to help her.
“It turned out the occupants of the vehicle were in fact the victims’ boyfriend and his brother.”
The accused was apprehended and handed over to the police.
A case of rape was opened at the Normandien police station, and the accused was charged accordingly.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the 15 years handed down to Mncube.
“I also thanked the two men who assisted the woman and apprehended the accused. We cannot tolerate people who are terrorising our vulnerable women and children in the province. Our police officers will always make sure that those involved are taken to court for prosecutions,” he said.
