JUST IN: Three life sentences handed to Ladysmith rapist and murderer

During the investigation, it was determined that the accused was also linked another rape case, where a 10-year-old victim was raped in November 2014.

The Ladysmith Regional Court convicted and sentenced 48-year-old Jabulani Mtshali to three life sentences, for two counts of rape and murder on November 17.

KZN SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the incident occurred on October 3, 2015.

It’s believed 65-year-old Nomusa Zane was walking along Madiba Drive, near the Ladysmith Abattoir, when Mtshali accosted her.

“He lured her into nearby bushes, under the pretext that he was selling roof sheeting. While in the bushes, Mtshali proceeded to rape and strangle her.”

Lieutenant Zwane said the victim also sustained severe and fatal injuries after she was brutally assaulted with a hammer.

“A case of rape and murder was opened at the Ladysmith police station before the docket was handed over to the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for further investigation, which led to the arrest of the accused.”
