A warning goes out to people in Ladysmith who have South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards, as a con-artist is active in town.
According to local resident Mr Moola, a white woman called him on the phone and asked for personal details about his SASSA card.
He said the lady asked for his card number, his PIN number and also his identity number.
He was wise enough to realise that nobody from SASSA would be asking for this type of information, but some of his elderly neighbours who were also contacted by the lady actually gave her the information she asked for.

Mr Moola quickly contacted SASSA and found out they do not phone people and ask them for these details. He also confirmed that no one from SASSA is actively calling anyone in Ladysmith.
People should be wary of giving out information to strangers over the phone, not only regarding SASSA cards but any personal information.
Those with elderly relatives should frequently check if they have fallen victim to such scams. In many cases, trusting elderly people are easy targets for scams of this nature.
