JUST IN: Children held at gunpoint during Suryaville armed robbery
"The next thing I knew, two men approached me in my prayer room, pointing a firearm at me and demanding jewellery and money. They took me to my room, pushed me to the floor and covered me with a duvet. They then proceeded to ransack my cupboards with a hammer," recalled the resident.
Suryaville – Going about her daily routine on Saturday, November 17, a Manzil Crescent resident wasn’t prepared for the situation that awaited her.
“I returned home at around 5.30pm and greeted my children, who were watching TV. I put my handbag on the table, and went to conduct my prayers in our prayer room,” said the victim.
The woman said she heard a faint yelp from her son, but brushed it off as she thought the siblings were having a tiff, as children sometimes do.

“The next thing I knew, two men approached me in my prayer room, pointing a firearm at me and demanding jewellery and money. They took me to my room, pushed me to the floor and covered me with a duvet. They then proceeded to ransack my cupboards with a hammer,” recalled the resident.
“They also kept threatening to hurt us if I looked at them, but thank the Lord we were not hurt. It all happened so fast. In less than ten minutes, they were gone.”
According to the woman, the perpetrators made away with jewellery, money, a laptop and an external hard drive before fleeing in a white BMW.
The resident claimed the incident was traumatising. Living in the area for more than 14 years, she said this was her first encounter of a robbery.
She warned fellow residents to be vigilant at all all times, and to be on the lookout for suspicious looking people and vehicles in the area.
The next day, Sunday November 19, a second double robbery was reported in Asnika Crescent, where five unknown suspects entered the homes, armed with guns, and proceeded to rob the victims of cash and valuables.
Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube confirmed the robbery had taken place.
“The case is being investigated, as it was possible the suspects are linked to other robberies in the area.”
