A large crowd of protesters gathered outside the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court today (November 22) after a suspect appeared in court, related to a shooting incident.
It was initially reported that the suspect was linked to the October 31 mass shooting near Matiwaneskop. Police have, however, confirmed that he is linked to the attempted assassination of Mr Muzikayifani Ngobese.
Police stress that, at this stage, he has not been linked to the October mass shooting, as earlier reported.
“It is alleged that he was involved in the attempted murder of Mr Ngobese, which took place in September,” said Colonel Thembeka Mbhele of the Provincial Media Communications Centre.

Police have also confirmed that no arrests have been made regarding the Matiwaneskop shooting, which took place last month, and a special task team is investigating.
Heavily-armed police escorted the suspect to the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court this morning.
A heavy presence of police and Public Safety officers monitored the situation as protesters gathered outside the court today, waving placards and chanting that bail must not be granted.
The case has been remanded until November 24.
