Ladysmith Secondary honours teacher as she leaves a lasting legacy
Undoubtedly, Ms Chinnah leaves an indelible mark on the many generations of parents, learners and peers who have had the privilege of interacting with her
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” These are the words of William Arthur Ward… and Ms K Chinnah is a great teacher!
The staff of Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) bid a fond farewell to the doyen of educators, Ms K Chinnah, who will leave the profession after 40 years of unstinting dedication and loyalty to both the school and profession.
Ms Chinnah, reverently known as Sushie, joined Lasec’s academic staff in 1984 and rapidly rose to the rank of Head of Department (Humanities). Her artistic talents, creativity, fine sense for detail and quest for perfection have always served as driving forces behind high-profiled projects aimed at nature conservation and the conservation of the rhino. Her most recent and illustrious undertaking was the Green Impact Concert which was held recently.
In his keynote address at the gala dinner held in her honour at Mount View Lodge on Friday, Lasec principal Mr AN Govender unequivocally praised Ms Chinnah for her unparalleled devotion, honesty and sincerity, and urged the younger generation of teachers to imbibe Ms Chinnah’s profound wisdom and consider her as their role model.
Unlike most educators who ride off into the setting sun and into a world of obscurity, Ms Chinnah leaves behind a legacy, the School’s Monogram – her pet creation. And this is but one of her many fine achievements.
Undoubtedly, Ms Chinnah leaves an indelible mark on the many generations of parents, learners and peers who have had the privilege of interacting with her. The school will be poorer in her absence.
Ms Chinnah leaves with the school’s heartfelt gratitude, best wishes and love. It’s true that parting is such sweet sorrow, but more importantly, “love is proved in the letting go”.
