Jasper Avenue has become another victim of illegal dumping.
According to residents of the street, problems began with overgrown grass and small scale dumping of general refuse.
This attracted dogs to the area, in search of scraps.
Over a period of a few months however, residents said the situation took a drastic turn and Jasper Avenue had transformed into a makeshift dumpsite.
“I saw some people driving around the Sunnyridge area. When turned onto Jasper Avenue, I saw them burying dead dogs near the donga,” commented one resident.
Investigation revealed a slew of problems plaguing Jasper Avenue, including missing drain covers, damaged concrete culverts and evidence of vagrancy.
Litter was strewn far down into the donga and even in the nearby trees.
While the resident did see municipal workers in the area, he said they cleaned out the storm water drains and left the refuse behind.
“Recently I saw a bakkie drive into the area and begin dumping waste. I took a photograph of the vehicle and they sped off, but I’m concerned they will target me now.”
At the time of going to print, no feedback was given by the municipality.
In a previous interview with Superintendent of Waste, Thava Kelly, new by-laws would harshly punish those responsible for illegal dumping.
She reiterated dumping was only permitted on specified sites.

“There will be a fine imposition for those who dump. The municipality is spending a huge amount of funds to remove illegal dumping, which will impact on the tariff of charges.”
The first of the new by-laws is currently in the draft phase.
There was no further feedback on when the incoming regulations would be set out for approval and ultimately, promulgation as law.
