MUST READ: ‘Dumpsite’ festers beneath Drakensberg Drive bridge

The resident suggested the municipality should make more skips available and accessible for building rubble and specific refuse.

The illegal dumpsite beneath Drakensberg Drive bridge continues to expand.

Investigation has revealed the situation has worsened since the last report in the Newcastle Advertiser at the end of October this year.

Yet the municipality has remained silent on this problem.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a resident expressed disgust this week at ‘the behaviour of some inconsiderate residents and contractors’.

“[They] seem to think they can dump refuse or building rubble wherever there is a vacant piece of land.”

As a long-time citizen of Newcastle, the resident said he took pride in upkeep of his property and the surrounding area.

Yet for others, it seemed fine to make it someone else’s problem.

“The dumping really creates a bad impression of the area and Newcastle as a whole. There are multiple areas where this is occurring and it’s a disgrace.”

The resident suggested the municipality should make more skips available and accessible for building rubble and specific refuse.

He felt the garden refuse site at the Show Grounds was insufficient.

“It seems like people are too lazy to drive out to the dumpsite. Where is the law enforcement?”

Attempts to seek response from the municipality were unsuccessful.

Yet residents are urged to exercise their own responsibility with regard to dumping, and help contribute toward a cleaner, better Newcastle.

The Enforcement Unit can be reached at 060 811 6528.

Alternatively, residents can call 034 328 4700, 086 014 4144 or 034 328 7747/ 26/ 24 for enquiries on dumping and for the hiring of skips or cranes.
