Since last night (November 30), community members receiving water from the Ezakheni Plant have been left with dry taps. Some areas have had no water at all, while others have experienced low pressure.
According to uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza, Eskom has shut off the power supply to the Ezakheni Plant for emergency maintenance purposes for a minimum of six hours.
“uThukela experienced problems with the storm last night, which resulted in low water levels at the plant. This combined with the power outage places Ladysmith in a very vulnerable position,” added the uThukela spokesperson.

uThukela says that the recovery period for Ezakheni is 48 hours, and the recovery period for the old Indian area is 24 hours. The district municipality hopes that the plant will be operational by Sunday and that they will be able to fully restore water supply to all the affected areas.
