The Kirkland Street informal trade centre has at last opened for business.
This is a culmination of 15 years of doubt as to whether the shelters would ever be utilised.
In October however, the project finally cast aside the label ‘white elephant’.
An official launch is set to take place in coming months.
According to Portfolio Councillor for Development Planning and Human Settlements, Matthew Shunmugam, the idea of an informal trade area came about in 2002.
“The original idea was to emulate informal trade stands in the township areas.”
To date, all of the shelters now boast tenants and budding businesses.
