In today’s media briefing, MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda highlighted police successes in combating taxi violence in the Ladysmith area over the years.
In a surprise move today (December 6), he banned taxis from the Klipriver Taxi Association and Sizwe Taxi Association from operating in Ladysmith
MEC Kaunda said, “Our interventions resulted in the formation of a three-sided committee which was facilitating dialogue between the families involved in this long, drawn-out, bitter and bloody conflict.”
This culminated in a cleansing ceremony which was held between the Mvelase, Mabaso and Gamede families in the Esidakeni area in February this year.

This investigation led to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of a hit-man (inkabi), Themba Raphael “Kiniti” Mvelase, who was found guilty and sentenced to 176 years in prison.
There have been breakthroughs in many other cases, including one that saw the arrest of a then police officer, Lungisani Mgaga, who was involved in the taxi conflict.
