ALERT: SAPS Spokesperson issues social media danger warning

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube is appealing to residents of Newcastle to be extra cautious of what information they share on social media.

According to Ncube, by posting personal information on social media, residents are putting themselves at risk of becoming targets for burglaries, theft and various other crimes.

“Think about what you are posting,” he warned.

Capt. Ncube advised parents to educate their children on the dangers of social media, and the consequences of sharing certain personal information.

Do not share photos of the contents in your house, especially not of expensive valuables, nor your location, as you are at risk of being robbed.

For example Ncube said by posting your vacation dates online, it gave criminals the opportunity to burglarise your home, knowing you would not be there.

“You don’t know who is saving your pictures and checking your updates.You really need to stop this, as it is going to ruin your life, family and possibly even your marriage. Social media is the devil’s eyes, ears and mouth. Don’t fall into the devil’s trap.”
