Ladysmith rapist sentenced to life imprisonment

After several remands, the case was finalised in the Dundee Regional Court recently

Zamani Siboniso Shabalala (22) was recently sentenced to life imprisonment on a charge of rape.

During March 2013, Shabalala forced a 15-year-old girl into his premises in the Ekuvukeni area, where he raped her. He was arrested the following day by officers from Ekuvukeni SAPS.

He made a brief appearance in the Ekuvukeni Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail. He then absconded.

A warrant for his arrest was issued and he was re-arrested in the Ekuvukeni area.

After several remands, the case was finalised in the Dundee Regional Court recently.

The case was investigated by Sergeant MH Mazibuko of the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit.
