Newcastle police have confirmed that a 30-year-old woman was the latest victim of an attempted rape that occurred on the afternoon of January 10 on Scott Street.
According to bystanders, the woman was walking through the veld on Scott Street when she was accosted by a man, who allegedly struck her on the head with a rock.

Thanks to swift response from Two Eagles Security and neighbourhood watch, together with SAPS saw the 55-year-old attacker arrested.
“The suspect was arrested and appeared before Newcastle Magistrate Court on January 11,” said Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube.
“Newcastle FCS are investigating a case of attempted rape.”
The victim of the assault was treated by emergency services at the scene.
The police provide the following tips to prevent being a victim of rape:
Personal protection is important when walking. Plan the safest and most well lit route. Be aware of your surroundings including persons, places and things.
Date or Acquaintance Rape
– Select your date with caution
– Have dates in public places
– Use alcohol responsibly
– Set your limits
– Never leave functions or events with a stranger or someone you have just met
Stranger Rape
– Never walk alone after dark
– Walk in well-lit areas only, if you must walk somewhere
– Never hitchhike
– Have your car keys in hand when approaching your car
– Keep car windows up and doors locked once inside
– Check back seat and floor area before getting in the car
– Park in well-lit areas
– Never pick up hitchhikers
– Raise the bonnet if you have car trouble.
Then remain in your locked car
– Ask a passing motorist to call police for you
– Don’t stop to help stranded motorists
– Always close and lock your door once you enter your house
– Know who is at the door before opening it
– Never give your address or phone number to a stranger
Preventive Measures against Rape
– Be rude
– Make noise, scream or blow your car’s hooter.
– Act crazy – threaten to throw up
– Make every effort to get away
– If all else fails, use physical resistance
– Fight to survive, never give up
Rape Victims
– Report the crime to police immediately
– Remain calm and try to remember physical description of your attacker
– Try to recall the circumstances as they happened in chronological order
– Seek medical help if injured or raped
– Don’t change clothes or wash clothes as they may contain crucial DNA evidence
– Don’t bathe after a sexual assault
– Don’t disturb anything in the area where the assault or crime occurred
“Remember, you can take steps to protect yourself from being the victim of a crime, educate yourself. “
“Protect yourself, and report all criminal activity or suspected criminal activity to the your local police force.”
