The public strike action that was planned for Tuesday (January 23) has been cancelled.
Municipal Communications Manager Siyabonga Maphalala had this to say about the strike action…
A group called the NPA (National People’s Ambassadors) had arranged an all wards strike in the Alfred Duma Local Municipality, which was supposed to be held on Tuesday, to have a municipal shutdown by the public from all 36 wards in the municipality.
A meeting was held on Thursday (January 18) between the municipality and the NPA at the Lister Clarence Building, where a list was given to the NPA by the municipality of what they had to comply with during the strike.
The list contained the legal requirements for a public strike which has to be approved by the municipality.
A request was made for the meeting to be postponed on Thursday so that the NPA could return today (January 19) with all the requirements.
These are just some of the requirements that were given to the NPA, which they failed to comply with:
They needed to have a list of marshals to be deployed to make sure there is safety for the people.

They also did not have a formal letter of notice for the municipality of what they intended to do.
They did not provide the municipality with a security plan for the strike, and they also failed to comply with safety and security requirements for the protest.
The protest was planned for all the wards in the municipality. The reasons behind the planned protest were: the taxi industry being unfairly treated; service delivery in the municipality; and also water services.
Communications Manager Siyabonga Maphalala said the strike has been cancelled until all the requirements are met by the NPA.
